Summer Arts Program Overview

- SmAP is a week-long summer day camp for children ages 5-12. SmAP began in 2004 as a summer extension of our After-School Program, initally offered every Saturday in the summer months. In 2007, a SmAP college-student intern changed the format to what it is today and placed a further emphasis on critical and creative thinking through the arts. We strive to help children not only make art, but to find ways to consciously express themselves and cultivate their ability to explain their art to others. SmAP also provides BGSU students the chance to mentor a child, helping him/ her to explore all aspects of artistic expression and to serve as a positive, adult role model.
-
- Program Goals:
- 1. Develop meaningful relationships among children and college-student mentors,
2. Cultivate artistic ability and the enjoyment of art in children,
3. Teach critical and creative thinking skills through arts education that focuses on collaboration and sharing,
4. Provide meaningful volunteer opportunity for BGSU students.

Lesson Plan Examples
Each SmAP, BGSU student volunteers and UCF staff help to create lesson plans for art projects that encourage critical thinking and understanding of making and creating art. SmAP art projects help children to think about their art before, during, and after they make it, helping them to see art as a method of self expression and a way to communicate with others.
